The powered-device values are standardized power budgets, not a prediction of what an AP will continuously consume. A switch may allocate more power than the AP is using at a particular moment.

When selecting equipment, evaluate both the per-port PoE standard and the switch's total PoE power pool. A switch may have many PoE+ ports but still lack enough total power to operate all ports at their maximum allocation simultaneously.

What Huawei Confirms About 802.3af Restricted Operation

Huawei documentation states that an AP may operate with restrictions when powered by 802.3af and gives an unavailable USB port as an example.

The phrase "for example" is important. It means USB unavailability is a confirmed restriction, but it does not establish that USB is the only possible restriction for every AirEngine 5773 model, hardware revision, and software release.

The available manufacturer documentation does not, by itself, prove that 802.3af will:

  • Disable the 5 GHz radio
  • Reduce the number of spatial streams
  • Reduce channel width
  • Disable Multi-Link Operation
  • Reduce transmit power
  • Reduce wireless throughput
  • Increase packet loss
  • Cause the AP to restart

Those behaviors should only be reported after they have been reproduced on the exact AP model, firmware version, PSE, cable, controller, configuration, and client used in the test.

An 802.3at injector can be practical for one or two APs where replacing the access switch is not economical. Confirm that the injector supports the required Ethernet link speed as well as the required PoE standard.

An injector also adds another powered device, another cable connection, and another failure point. It normally provides less centralized monitoring and remote control than a managed PoE switch.

Upgrade the Access Switch

For a multi-AP deployment, a managed PoE switch is usually the cleaner operational design. It provides centralized power monitoring, per-port restart, alarm visibility, power priority, and simpler capacity planning.

  9. Repeat the same test without changing the cable, RF configuration, client, or traffic path.
