Can Huawei AirEngine 6776-56TP Switch to 2radio-standard Mode?

Yes. Huawei AirEngine 6776-56TP supports changing its AP radio profile to 2radio-standard on the verified V600R023C10 and V600R024C00 software branches. Huawei lists V600R023C10 as the first supported release for this model, and the corresponding Radio Resource Management command references make 2radio-standard available to AirEngine x760-series APs other than AirEngine 5760-10. For V600R024C10 and later, the public documents reviewed do not provide a model-specific table explicitly confirming the same mode set for AirEngine 6776-56TP, so later-version support remains not confirmed until checked on the actual WAC and AP.

What is Actually Being Changed?

AirEngine 6776-56TP contains three physical radio resources:

Radio 1 5 GHz high band 2×2
Radio 2 5 GHz low band 4×4

Huawei’s hardware description identifies the AP as a three-radio model and assigns the two 5 GHz resources to separate high- and low-frequency ranges.

That physical design does not force the AP to remain permanently in the logical 3radio profile. The WAC can deliver a different supported radio operating mode through an AP system profile.

At the same time, three physical radios do not guarantee support for every radio-mode option. Huawei states that the WAC checks the AP’s reported capabilities. If the WAC delivers a mode that the AP does not support, the AP uses its supported default mode instead.

Disabling a Radio Is Not the Same Operation

There are two distinct ways to reduce the number of active service radios.

Administratively disabling one radio

Huawei provides the radio-level command:

radio disable

This disables the selected physical radio. It changes that radio’s administrative state, but it does not establish that the AP’s effective operating profile has become 2radio-standard.

Changing the AP radio profile

The command:

radio-mode 2radio-standard

changes the AP’s complete radio operating profile through an AP system profile. Huawei warns that changing this mode may reset the AP. The resulting effective mode can then be verified as 2radio-standard.

These operations should therefore not be described interchangeably:

radio disable turns off one radio.
radio-mode 2radio-standard changes the AP’s logical radio mode.


Verified Software Boundary

Huawei lists V600R023C10 as the first supported version for AirEngine 6776-56TP.

The command references establish the following boundary:

V600R024C10 and later Not confirmed by a public 6776-56TP-specific mode table

The V600R023C10 and V600R024C00 references both define 2radio-standard and state that the radio-mode function applies to AirEngine x760 APs except AirEngine 5760-10. They also provide the same configuration example.

Huawei publishes V600R024C10 documentation for AirEngine 6776-56TP, but the existence of that software package alone does not prove that every earlier radio-mode capability is unchanged.

Minimal Configuration Workflow

On a compatible WAC running a verified release, Huawei’s documented example is:

This uses the default AP system profile, which is bound to AP groups by default. If a custom AP system profile is created instead, it must be bound to the intended AP or AP group before its settings can take effect.

A separate commit ap-group command is not part of Huawei’s documented radio-mode example and should not be added to this workflow without confirming that the specific WAC platform requires it.

Service-impact warning: Huawei states that switching the radio mode causes or may cause the AP to restart. Make the change during an approved maintenance window.


Confirm the Model, Release and Effective Mode

Use only the checks needed to answer the compatibility question.

Confirm the AP model

The Type field should identify the unit as AirEngine6776-56TP. Huawei documents display ap all as the standard WAC command for reviewing online AP types and status.

Confirm the installed release

Use the WAC’s AP-version display supported by the installed controller release and verify that the AP is running the intended V600 software branch. Do not infer the AP software release only from the WAC version.

Confirm the effective mode

A successful change should report:

2radio-standard

Huawei defines this command as the query for the effective radio mode reported by online APs.

On V600R024C10, an authorized administrator can also enter diagnostic view and run:

display ap ability ap-id 

The Supported radio mode field shows the mode set reported by that individual AP. Huawei specifically documents this command for checking an AP’s actual mode-switching capability.

Which 5 GHz Radio Remains Active?

Huawei publicly documents the physical layout:

  • Radio 1 is the 2×2 high-band 5 GHz radio.

  • Radio 2 is the 4×4 low-band 5 GHz radio.

However, the public sources reviewed do not explicitly state that 2radio-standard on AirEngine 6776-56TP always retains Radio 2 and unmaps Radio 1.

That model-specific behavior should therefore be treated as not confirmed, rather than inferred from MIMO capacity or radio numbering. After switching, verify the effective radio state on the actual AP and WAC.

Practical Rule

The AirEngine 6776-56TP can be configured for 2radio-standard on V600R023C10 and V600R024C00. This is a true AP radio-mode change, not merely the administrative shutdown of one 5 GHz interface.

For newer software, verify the capability reported by the online AP before making the change. Do not assume that a three-radio hardware design, a WAC command keyword or behavior observed on another x760 model proves the exact operating map of this AP.
