Overview

With rapid advancements in 5G deployment, rising broadband demand, IoT growth, and the continuous expansion of data centers, telecom operators increasingly depend on high-performance fiber optic networks. Fiber offers high bandwidth, low latency, and excellent transmission quality, making it critical for modern communications infrastructure.

Our client is a telecom operator based in Tampere, Finland, providing services including mobile communications, broadband access, enterprise connectivity, and multi-service data transport. Years of continuous operation led to equipment evolution and business expansion, resulting in disorganized cabling within their service access room.

To align with headquarters’ standards, the operator planned to renovate the existing access room into a benchmark facility—enhancing maintenance efficiency, improving fiber network quality, and supporting service demands from public, enterprise, and wireless sectors.

Challenges

The original cabling architecture relied on traditional direct connections, resulting in excessive patch cords inside cabinets. This increased maintenance complexity, created airflow obstructions, and negatively affected network stability—ultimately impacting business operations.

Horizontal management zones featured complex wiring structures that made maintenance and expansion difficult. Scaling services or adjusting the cabinet layout often required extensive physical reorganization and rewiring, increasing workload and operational risks.

The lack of structured cable organization, inconsistent equipment layout, and unclear labeling made it difficult for technicians to quickly identify and resolve faults. Poor aesthetics and unmanaged cabling also introduced avoidable safety and reliability risks.

Solutions

Network-Switch (NS) deployed a comprehensive high-density structured cabling solution tailored for telecom service provider data centers.

1. NS High-Density Fiber Cassettes and 1U Enclosures

NS provided high-density modular fiber cassettes installed within 1U fiber enclosures supporting up to 144 fibers.
This created an efficient, space-saving structured cabling framework with clean routing and improved rack utilization.

2. NS Multi-Fiber Trunk Assemblies (144F, 12×12F)

Backbone links were upgraded with 144-fiber NS pre-terminated multi-fiber trunk assemblies, replacing traditional simplex patch cords.
These trunks:

  • Reduce cable quantity and connection points
  • Minimize failure rates
  • Improve manageability
  • Deliver low insertion loss and high bandwidth
  • Enhance transmission performance across cabinets

3. NS Modular Plug-and-Play Architecture

All NS cassettes support tool-free installation, while pre-terminated trunk cables eliminate complex field terminations.
This enables:

  • Rapid deployment
  • Simplified installation
  • Over 80% reduction in activation time during capacity upgrades or new service deployment

4. Standardized Cable Management and Labeling

NS horizontal and vertical cable management components were integrated to enforce unified cabling standards.
Clear label identification, zone-based organization, and optimized routing allow maintenance teams to operate more efficiently.

Visual port markings on NS cassettes further support fast troubleshooting, helping technicians quickly pinpoint faulty connections and restore services promptly.

Results

By applying NS’s structured cabling principles and high-density fiber components, cable clutter in the telecom room was effectively eliminated.
The modular plug-and-play design drastically improved business activation efficiency, reducing installation time by up to 80%.

Key improvements include:

  • Cleaner and safer cable pathways
  • Simplified maintenance and fault isolation
  • Enhanced aesthetics and operational order
  • Reduced fault risk in vertical and horizontal zones
  • A scalable, future-ready structured cabling environment

The result is a benchmark telecom room that meets the client’s long-term goals for reliability, maintainability, and future expansion.
